Hitchhiking Records

Some interesting or - at least funny - hitchhike facts

All life hitchhiking
  • Benoit Grieu (French hitch-hiker) started his hitchhike trip in 1979 and has been on thee road ever since. He claims to have hitched 1,500,000 km (that’s more than 50.000 each year)...
  • Alexey Vorov (Russian) has said to have hitched 1,130,000 km since 1982.
Furthest Point to the south
  • Scott Base, Antarctica, 77° 51'. The American Benjaman Bachelder hitched 5 km from McMurdo Station to Scott Base in December 2005. The same month he held a seminar on hitchhiking in Antarctica and got a ride baack in a snowmobile.
The highest point on the land
  • Mountain Everest base camp in Nepal at 5,400 meters. Pavel Trcala (Czech Republic) received a ride from one of the Everest Base Camps after days of climbing the Mount Everest.
The lowest temperature
  • –61°C. Elena Saturova hitched between Ust’-Nera and Sasuman in East Yakutya, Russia.
Most visited countries
  • Benoit Grieu (France) has been hitchhiking in about 170 countries.
The longest wait
  • Alexey Vorov waited 6 days for a lift in Chucotka (Russia). Because of the long waiting time he decided to walk 50 km after having waited already for 3 days. He got a lift in Komsomol'skij to Majskij (50 km) and after another 3 days of finally got a lift back to civilization.. The lowest temperature during the time of his travel was -55°C in Tyoplyj Kluch (Chucotka).
Longest wait between two stops
  • William Innes from Scotland, UK. He received a ride on a milk float on ‘collection’ day and it took him 4.5 hours to travel 2 miles (3.5KM) from North London to the start of the M1 (Motorway).
24 hours hitchhiking
  • On 28 November 1998 (7:30 a.m.) to 29 November 1998 (6:30 a.m.), Pavel Trcala (Czech Republic) travelled 2777 km (1736 miles). The route? From Miami to Chicago via Jacksonville (Florida), Savannah (Georgia), Columbia (South Carolina), Asheville (North Carolina), Knoxville (Tennessee), Lexington (Kentucky), Toledo (Ohio), South Bend (Indiana), and Harvey (Illinois). The hitch consisted of five separate lifts.
