El Topo

The movie “El Topo” ranks high in the list of my all-time favourite movies. El Top was for good reasons one of the most controversial movies in 1970s and 1980s and still shocks today. I already posted a similar post on one of my other blogs, but decided to publish it here again.

El Topo got banned to be shown in big cinemas in the West and was thus early onwards deemed to become an underground flick (fortunately). The movie only got played in small independent movie theaters. It was only until the recently released DVD that the movie became known to a wider audience. Because of its explicit contents, hallucinatory effects and mystic symbolism the movie has become a major source of inspiration for people like Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch and John Lennon.

The movie mixes Christian symbolism and Oriental philosophy with a good doses of violence and psychedelic flavours. The outcome? God in a western!
