The Man from Earth

Don't forget to post your comments on my research abstract, which I posted yesterday! Anyways, today, another movie since I am too busy for writing a constructive meaningful post.

Ever heard of "The Man from Earth"? Its a pretty decent movie, directed by Richard Schenkman, about intellectual discourse...

Plot: An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years (IMDB).

Enjoy, but do not expect something easy, albeit worthwhile.

After several months we are THRILLED that people are still discussing our film! This morning we received the wonderful news that "Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth" was nominated for "Best DVD Release" in the 34th Annual Saturn Awards (http://www.saturnawards.org/nominations.html).

We couldn't be more pleased, nor feel more honored. One of our primary goals from the start of this project was to do right by Jerome Bixby's legacy within the science fiction community, and this nomination, we feel, recognizes that effort.

Our thanks go to all the members of The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films, especially the members of the DVD committee.

And to fans of the film... if you happen to KNOW anybody on the DVD committee, please let them know how much you like it!

PLEASE BUY THE DVD AND SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FILM!!!!

warmest greetings--

IF YOU DOWNLADED THIS MOVIE OR STREAMED ONLINE WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT - PLEASE READ!!!

We, the filmmakers behind "Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth" understand that this is a film many movie fans from all over the world want to see. And we especially understand that if you live outside the United States, you have absolutely no way of knowing when this film might be coming to your local cinema, video store, or TV... if ever! Indeed, all international rights to the movie are still available.

And as a result you may have downloaded the film from one of the many torrent (or other) sites available. Chances are, you paid nothing to do so. But please understand that we are just some independent filmmakers who put everything we had into our little movie, and you really hurt us directly when you downloaded the movie illegally.

Judging from the postings at IMDB.com, we see that the vast majority of you quite like the film; many of you even love the film and have watched it repeatedly.

We made this movie with a great deal of love, sacrifice and effort on a low budget. But as low as the budget was, it was still a LOT of money to us, as well as to the people who trusted us with their investment to go ahead and make such an unusual, even controversial film.

So we are making an unusual request... asking you to return the love, if you will:

Please visit www.manfromearth.com, and make some sort of donation in exchange for the enjoyment our movie brought you. It could be fifty cents, it could be fifty dollars. Perhaps you feel the average weekly video store rental is a fair amount. Whatever it is, it might be small to you, but if every single person who downloaded the movie -- heck, if only the people who LIKED the movie -- donated a few dollars, would certainly help get us to breakeven. Just go to www.manfromearth.com and click on "donate" (you don't even need to have an account). The address to use is ewilkinson100@comcast.net.

The money you donate will go DIRECTLY towards everone who worked on and invested in our dream. And who knows... if we ever do break even on "Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth", maybe we can go make another intelligent, thought-provoking film.

Thank you very, very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Eric D. Wilkinson - Producer & Richard Schenkman - Producer / Director

Dear Mr. Wilkinson,

I recently read a post on a blog that linked your movie The Man from Earth to a online movie streaming site. The comment you left on that blog was something like: "we invested a lot of time and money in the production of this 'independent' film", I thought okay of course you did, cos so thus a regular employee of any given company or any self-employed artist/ architect etc. However, you continued and argued in similar speech "please donate money and don't download this movie illegally (correct me if I am wrong)". Now, here I found a problem for several reasons.

Judging from your resume and Schenkman's I see no poverty. I see a brilliant and luxurious life instead, based on what you achieved (I think I even saw a Playboy movie on your or Schenkman's record), I am not saying that this is unlawful or unethical considering that many people are off worse. However, the problem with your proposition of donating money or prevention from downloading is that your film becomes only accessible to a limited audience which does not have the means to go and rent your movie, see it in cinema or buy the DVD. Now you could argue that these people do have the money to surf on the Internet, however this might not even be the case as they buy an 'illegal' DVD worth 1 USD from the streets of India or China and admire your work that way. You are allowing them to see a different reality and giving them a moment of enjoyment, one that might even last for some time (i.e. a great gift)! Moreover, the people that do watch your movie directly over the Net and are perhaps not able to finance all 'intellectual' movies that (i believe) make the world a better place, cos the prime reason for having a Net connection in the first place is due to their line of work (students being the best example perhaps).

Now my question is, do you rather make movies for the intellectual bourgeoisie that see your movies at film festivals and buy your DVD anyways (cause they have the money to do so) and let them self-masturbate in their well paid job positions? Or... do you really want your movie to be meaningful and set an example of making it available to everybody out there to see (disregarding income level and education level). That way your movie(s) in my eyes have a much more rewarding benefit, than merely financially.

I hope you give this serious thought, as I personally think that you guys are better off financially than 95 percent of the world out there. This is also really a chance for you to make an example of the whole movie industry and do the best thing of denying the glooming dollar figures that so many of these Hollywood people have in their eyes.

Best regards and please do continue with your excellent work!
