Research outline

A friend of mine asked me yesterday whether I could give her a brief, concise outline of my research topic. "Fine" I said, "no problem, check my weblog at http://marenqo.blogspot.com!"

So, I decided to write a shorter version of my proposal. This short summary is only 150 words and gives you an idea of what I hope to be writing about during my PhD.

"My research will attempt to analyse how China's recent growth will impact globalisation. The main argument here is that Chinese capital is not domestically rooted, nor can its successes be territorially defined. Instead, it will be argued that China's rise is unique principally due to the fact that its economic growth is integral to globalisation itself.

In the pursuit of creating a new platform for discussions on China's role in the globalisation process, this research will pursue an innovative space of analysis. This "third" space will attempt to construct a holistic, cross disciplinary approach based on a radical rethinking of the concepts of space and capital".

The foundation of this discussion lies in a postmodern rethinking of traditional Marxist approaches to development. This proposed mode of analysis maintains that capitalism has become a borderless apparatus of power.

This research will de facto argue that China's growth is fostered by a multitude of global forces, which interact with both regional and local forces inside and outside of the country's territorial borders. Finally, I firmly believe that researching China can function as an introductory platform for a rigorous reorientation, which could challenge the validity of our Western perceptions of globalisation".
