Filonov

Another lazy sunday. It is time for some art!!

This time I want to introduce you to Pavel Filonov, a Russian painter who lived from 1883 - to 1941.

Filonov was a controversial figure as he participated actively in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and served as a Chairman of the Revolutionary War Committee. It is known that many artists did the same at the time, as they all hoped that the revolutionary changes in society would help them in spreading new ideas and creativity in the Russia.

However, the revolutionists lost their fights and the Soviets reinforced power and control. Filonov’s art did not correspond to Soviet principles and he was virtually isolated and left without means. The painter lived and worked in poverty and hunger, but remained faithful to his principles both in his art and in his work with his pupils.

Fortunately and miraculously, till after the fall of the Iron Curtain his painting were kept well preserved. There exists a legend that Filonov's ghost protected his art and anybody trying to steal his paintings or to smuggle them abroad would soon diiee, become paralysed, or have a similar misfortune....More information of his life you can find here.

Some of his work I displayed below.
